The Longmeadow Police Department in Hampden County said they have received an influx of calls regarding sightings, but remind residents they can't do anything about them unless they are posing a danger to residents or pets.

While normally fearful of people, coyotes are most frequently seen during mating season (January-March) and when juveniles start leaving the family pack (September-November).

During that time, the department said they can sometimes be spotted crossing yards or streets.

"This behavior is not unusual, especially in residential areas bordering on open space where coyotes find their natural prey," the department said.

They may simply be taking a shortcut to their favorite hunting ground, they added.

To help keep the coyotes moving and from becoming a danger, they suggest making sure that pets and children are secure and that there are no likely food attractants present in the area.
